Geomys streckeri, also known as Strecker's pocket gopher, is a species of pocket gopher found in Texas. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the Texas pocket gopher. Chromosomal analyses have proven this species to be distinct. Analysis of its mitochondrial cytochrome b points to this species being a sister clade to Geomys personatus, Geomys attwateri, and Geomys tropicalis.{{cite journal |last1=Sudman |first1=Jerry R. |last2=Wickliffe |first2=Jeffrey K. |last3=Horner |first3=Peggy |last4=Smolen |first4=Michael J. |last5=Bickham |first5=John W. |last6=Bradley |first6=Robert D. |title=Molecular Systematics of Pocket Gophers of the Genus Geomys |journal=Journal of Mammalogy |date=24 August 2006 |volume=87 |issue=4 |pages=668-676 |doi=10.1644/05-MAMM-A-349R2.1 |url=https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/87/4/668/962580 |access-date=11 December 2023|doi-access=free }} Other evidence, using a Bayesian analysis of ribosomal RNA and certain proteins, points to it being embedded within the G. personatus clade and being a sister species to G. attwateri.{{cite journal |last1=Chambers |first1=Ryan R. |last2=Sudman |first2=Philip D. |last3=Bradley |first3=Robert D. |title=A Phylogenetic Assessment of Pocket Gophers (Geomys): Evidence from Nuclear and Mitochondrial Genes |journal=Journal of Mammalogy |date=2 June 2009 |volume=90 |issue=3 |pages=537-547 |doi=10.1644/08-MAMM-A-180R1.1 |url=https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/90/3/537/873320 |access-date=11 December 2023|doi-access=free }}
It is named after John Kern Strecker, an American herpetologist and namesake of the Strecker Museum.{{cite book |last1=Beolens |first1=Bo |last2=Watkins |first2=Michael |last3=Grayson |first3=Michael |title=The Eponym Dictionary of Mammals |date=2009 |publisher=Johns Hopkins University Press |location=2715 North Charles Street Baltimore, Maryland 21218-4363 |isbn=9789210576987 |pages=397}}
