Taxonomy
In its original description, G. smithi was compared to G. huronicus (now Arenophilus bipuncticeps).{{cite web |title=Arenophilus bipuncticeps Wood (1862) |url=https://www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/GFPF |website=Catalogue of Life |access-date=11 November 2021}} G. smithi was possibly based upon specimens of G. ampyx and may even be a senior synonym, though this is not confirmed.{{cite journal |last1=Crabill |first1=Ralph E. |title=A conspectus of the northeastern North American species of Geophilus (Chilopoda Geophilomorpha Geophilidae) |journal=Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington |date=1954 |volume=56 |pages=172–188 |doi= |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/16179236 |access-date=10 November 2021}}
