}}Georg Karl Wilhelm Hamel (12 September 1877 – 4 October 1954) was a German mathematician with interests in mechanics, the foundations of mathematics and function theory.{{MacTutor Biography|id=Hamel}}

Biography

Hamel was born in Düren, Rhenish Prussia. He studied at Aachen, Berlin, Göttingen, and Karlsruhe. His doctoral adviser was David Hilbert.{{MathGenealogy|id=7349}} He taught at Brünn in 1905, Aachen in 1912, and at Technische Universität Berlin in 1919. In 1927, Hamel studied the size of the key space for the Kryha encryption device. He was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1932 at Zurich and in 1936 at Oslo.{{cite book|author=Hamel, Georg|chapter=Räumliche Strahlen mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit|title=In: Comptes Rendus du Congrès International des Mathématiciens, Oslo, 1936|volume=2|pages=261–262|chapter-url=http://www.mathunion.org/ICM/ICM1936.2/Main/icm1936.2.0261.0262.ocr.pdf|access-date=4 December 2017|archive-date=5 December 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171205093052/http://www.mathunion.org/ICM/ICM1936.2/Main/icm1936.2.0261.0262.ocr.pdf|url-status=dead}} He was the author of several important treatises on mechanics.
