George Charamba is the Deputy Chief Secretary-Presidential Communications in the Office of the President of Zimbabwe and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information of Zimbabwe. His position makes him the official spokesperson for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.{{Cite web|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-zimbabwe-politics/zimbabwe-president-reshuffles-top-ranks-of-civil-service-idUSKCN1LZ2OX|title=Zimbabwe president reshuffles top ranks of civil service|last=|first=|date=2018-09-19|website=Reuters|language=en-US|access-date=2020-09-08}}

Background

Charamba was appointed to Robert Mugabe's government following the elections of 2000. He is among a set of individuals not allowed to travel to the United States because the Department of the Treasury is of the opinion that they are "undermining democratic processes" in Zimbabwe.[https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2003/03/10/03-5848/blocking-property-of-persons-undermining-democratic-processes-or-institutions-in-zimbabwe Blocking property of persons undermining democratic processes or institutions in Zimbabwe.]

Press Secretary

Following the departure of Jonathan Moyo from the information ministry, Charamba became the de facto government spokesperson and Permanent Secretary (Perm Sec) of the Ministry, usurping the powers of Sikhanyiso Ndlovu. He regularly appears in the government media denouncing the opposition parties, dismissing them as inspired and backed by Western powers.http://www.herald.co.zw/inside.aspx?sectid=31279&cat=1 {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080226163141/http://www.herald.co.zw/inside.aspx?sectid=31279&cat=1 |date=2008-02-26 }} (accessed 02/25/2008) He declared that the "West could go hang a thousand times" in response to Western criticism of Mugabe's re-election.http://www.thetimes.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=794027 {{Dead link|date=December 2019 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}"(accessed 02/07/2008)

In 2018, newly elected as President, Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed Nick Mangwana to replace George Charamba as Information and Broadcasting Services Perm Sec.{{Cite web|url=https://www.techzim.co.zw/2018/10/president-mnangagwa-appoints-nick-mangwana-to-replace-george-charamba-as-information-and-broadcasting-services-perm-sec/|title = President Mnangagwa Appoints Nick Mangwana to Replace George Charamba as Information and Broadcasting Services Perm Sec|date = October 2018}}
