History

Carver was opened in 1957 as a school for the black students in the Riverside neighborhood of South Memphis. Like many black schools of the time, it received far less funding than the white schools. As such, it was operated without a cafeteria. The school's first guidance counselor was Frances Hooks, the wife of activist Benjamin Hooks.{{cite news |last1=Waters |first1=David |title=Carver High ends as it began, in a segregated city |url=http://archive.commercialappeal.com/columnists/david-waters/carver-high-ends-as-it-began-in-a-segregated-city-34ed9b03-59ca-257e-e053-0100007f2122-382761701.html |accessdate=November 15, 2018 |date=June 13, 2016}} The first principal was Richard B. The students moved from the original building, A, to the later one, B, in 1997 as part of a $10,500,000 renovation. Building A was razed in May of that year.{{cite web |url=http://www.memphis-schools.k12.tn.us/schools/carver.hs/Principal's_message.htm |title=About Our School......... |publisher=George Washington Carver High School |date=June 2, 2001 |accessdate=December 23, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20010418062858/http://www.memphis-schools.k12.tn.us/schools/carver.hs/Principal's_message.htm |archive-date=April 18, 2001 |url-status=dead}}
