Background
Inspiration for the song came after Alaina experienced two public breakups over the course of a year and the singer was rediscovering the freedom of being single.{{cite news|last=Hubbard|first=Stephen|title=Lauren Alaina is "Getting Over Him" -- and finally learning to flirt|url=http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2021/2/10/lauren-alaina-is-getting-over-him-and-finally-learning-to-fl.html|access-date=April 14, 2021|work=ABC News Radio|date=February 10, 2021}} When Alaina decided to adapt the song as a duet, Pardi was her first choice for a vocal partner.{{cite news|last1=Reuter|first1=Annie|title=Lauren Alaina Is 'Getting Over Him' On Vulnerable New EP|url=https://www.soundslikenashville.com/news/lauren-alaina-getting-over-him-ep/|access-date=April 14, 2021|website=Sounds Like Nashville|date=September 4, 2020}} Alaina and Pardi had previously co-hosted the Academy of Country Music ACM Honors ceremony in 2018 and worked together on the track "Don't Blame It on Whiskey" from Pardi's 2019 album, Heartache Medication.{{cite news|last=Nicholson|first=Jessica |title=Lauren Alaina Moves On From Heartbreak In Fierce Jon Pardi Collaboration, "Getting Over Him"|url=https://americansongwriter.com/lauren-alaina-moves-on-from-heartbreak-in-fierce-jon-pardi-collaboration-getting-over-him/|access-date=April 14, 2021|work=American Songwriter|date=February 22, 2021}}
Content
"Getting Over Him" is a "blues-tinged" country song about using "casual, no-strings-attached fun" to get over a failed romance.{{cite news|last=Nicholson|first=Jessica|title=Lauren Alaina Welcomes Jon Pardi On New Track "Getting Over Him"|url=http://www.cmt.com/news/1830196/lauren-alaina-jon-pardi-new-track-getting-over-him/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210214042211/http://www.cmt.com/news/1830196/lauren-alaina-jon-pardi-new-track-getting-over-him/|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 14, 2021|access-date=April 14, 2021|work=CMT|date=February 10, 2021}} One of song's key lines—"My last call, first call, no falling/Just my getting over him guy"—was originally intended for another song, but was incorporated into the lyrics of "Getting Over Him" during the song's development due to their thematic fit. Alaina decided to compose the song as a duet to "soften" the message, telling American Songwriter that she is "really not a one-night stand girl."
Critical reception
Jessica Nicholson of American Songwriter wrote that "Getting Over Him" is a "sizzling slice of defiant fun." Billboard staff described the song as "a pitch perfect duet" in one review and the magazine's Melinda Newman wrote that "Alaina and Pardi make a no-strings-attached tryst sound deliciously good" in another.{{cite magazine|author=Billboard Staff|title=First Country: New Music From Hardy, Lauren Alaina, Carly Pearce, Brett James & More |url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/9445366/first-country-hardy-lauren-alaina-carly-pearce-brett-james-and-more|access-date=April 14, 2021 |magazine=Billboard|date=September 4, 2020}}{{cite magazine|last=Newman|first=Melinda |title=First Country: New Music From Carly Pearce, Lauren Alaina, Jon Pardi and Loretta Lynn |url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/9528710/first-country-new-music-carly-pearce/|access-date=April 14, 2021|magazine=Billboard|date=February 19, 2021}}
