Gideon Falls is an American horror comic book series created by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino, published by Image Comics. The series ran for 27 issues from March 2018–December 2020.
Plot
The lives of a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city's trash, and a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets, become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn, an otherworldly building that is alleged to have appeared in both the city and the small town, throughout history, bringing death and madness in its wake.{{cite web |title=Gideon Falls #1 |url=https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/gideon-falls-1 |publisher=Image Comics}}
Publication history
Gideon Falls was first announced in October 2017, in advance of New York Comic Con. Lemire set out to create an intelligent horror story, not one driven by gore, but by exploring the nature of evil. Sorrentino described the central character, Norton Sinclair, as inheriting the worst from himself and Lemire - nihilism from Sorrentino and obsession from Lemire.{{cite web |last1=Renaud |first1=Jeffrey |title=EXCLUSIVE: Lemire & Sorrentino Explore Horror in Gideon Falls |url=https://www.cbr.com/interview-gideon-falls-image-comics-lemire-sorrentino/ |website=Comic Book Resources|date=3 October 2017 }} Norton is based on a character Lemire created in 1996 for a short film during film school in Toronto.{{cite web |title=INTERVIEW – Jeff Lemire Talks Black Hammer, Gideon Falls, and Sticking with Ideas |url=http://www.comicsbeat.com/interview-jeff-lemire-talks-black-hammer-gideon-falls-and-sticking-with-ideas/ |website=Comics Beat}} The Black Barn from the series was somewhat inspired by the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks, though Lemire assured readers that he was going somewhere very different with the concept.{{cite magazine |last1=Holub |first1=Christian |title=Jeff Lemire talks Gideon Falls, his Twin Peaks-influenced horror comic |url=https://ew.com/books/2018/03/07/jeff-lemire-gideon-falls-twin-peaks-comic/ |magazine=Entertainment Weekly}} The story came from two separate stories that weren't working on their own, but finally clicked when Lemire put them together.{{cite web |last1=Salvatore |first1=Brian |last2=Grover |first2=Rowan |title=Lemire County #1: June 2018 |url=http://www.multiversitycomics.com/news-columns/lemire-county-1/ |website=Multiversity Comics|date=27 June 2018 }}
