Biography
The second eldest son of Ludovico II of Saluzzo and Margaret of Foix-Candale,{{cite book|title=Dizionario delle donne celebri piemontesi che nacquero, vissero, morirono od|year = 1853|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=rmKnqzWSQ-IC&q=Giovanni+Ludovico+di+Saluzzo++Margherita+di+Foix-Candale&pg=PA185|publisher=Carlo Novellis}} he was imprisoned by his mother Marguerite of Foix when, during the Italian Wars, he sided for Emperor Charles V (the marquesses of Saluzzo were traditional allied/subjects of the Kings of France). In 1528 he was freed by a popular insurrection, and elected as Marquess in lieu of his brother, Michele Antonio, who had died in battle.{{cite book|title=Le guerre e la dominazione dei francesi in Piemonte dall'anno 1536 al 1559 ...|year = 1867|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=rYyo4M-z9fsC&q=Giovanni+Ludovico+di+Saluzzo+france&pg=PA11|publisher=Giovanni Battista Adriani}}
One year later however, Francis I of France deposed him, replacing him with his brother Francesco. Giovanni Ludovico subsequently tried to recover his rule in Saluzzo with the Emperors help, however he was unsuccessful. As such the marquisate entered the control of the French monarchy.{{cite book|title=Studi saluzzesi|year = 1901|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=LF0ZAQAAMAAJ&q=Giovanni+Ludovico+di+Saluzzo+france|publisher=Domenico Carutti (barone di Cantogno)}}
