Giuseppe "Gipo" Farassino (11 March 1934 – 11 December 2013) was an Italian singer, songwriter, musician and politician.{{cite news|title=Gipo Farassino|work=Musica e dischi: corriere internazionale della musica|year=1972|volume=28|page=19}}{{sfn|Monti|Di Pietro|2003|p=209}}

Biography

As a songwriter Farassino produced more than 30 albums and virtually 50 singles. Most of his songs were in Piedmontese language{{sfn|Gambarotta|Ortona|Roccia|Tesio|2004|p=443}} and were directly inspired by French chanson and chansonniers. Farassino, who was also active as an actor, obtained his first major success in 1968 with Avere un amico, a collection of his most well-known songs in Italian.{{sfn|Emanuelli|2004|p=235}} Contextually, Farassino became a friend of Fabrizio De André{{cite news|title=De André mettevi l'amore sopra ad ogni cosa|work=La Stampa|year=1999|number=11|page=23}} and started to be active in the Italian Communist Party (PCI).{{cite web|url=http://www.nuovasocieta.it/e-morto-gipo-farassino-canto-il-piemonte|title=E' morto Gipo Farassino: cantò il Piemonte - Nuova Società|date=11 December 2013|publisher=|accessdate=14 August 2018}}

Having abandoned the PCI and having endorsed more and more Piedmontese nationalism, Farassino first joined the Piedmontese Union, founded and led by Roberto Gremmo (another former Communist), and later was the founder and leader of the "Piedmontese Autonomist Movement" in 1987. The party, which took the name of "Autonomist Piedmont", was soon involved in the formation of a federation of Northern Italian regionalist parties, Lega Nord, and was transformed into Lega Nord Piemont (LNP). Farassino, who would be the "national" secretary of the LNP until 1996, was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the 1992 general election.{{cite web|url=http://elezionistorico.interno.gov.it/candidati.php?tpel=C&dtel=05/04/1992&tpa=I&tpe=I&lev0=0&levsut0=0&lev1=1&levsut1=1&ne1=1&es0=S&es1=S&ms=S&ne=1&nlg=14&ts=C&ccp=4212|title=Dipartimento per gli Affari Interni e Territoriali|website=elezionistorico.interno.gov.it|accessdate=14 August 2018}} Having been defeated in a Senate single-seat constituency in the 1994 general election,{{cite web|url=http://elezionistorico.interno.gov.it/index.php?tpel=S&dtel=27/03/1994&tpa=I&tpe=L&lev0=0&levsut0=0&lev1=1&levsut1=1&lev2=1&levsut2=2&ne1=1&ne2=101&es0=S&es1=S&es2=S&ms=S|title=Dipartimento per gli Affari Interni e Territoriali|website=elezionistorico.interno.gov.it|accessdate=14 August 2018}} he was elected to the European Parliament in the 1994 European Parliament election.{{cite web|url=http://elezionistorico.interno.gov.it/candidati.php?tpel=E&dtel=12/06/1994&tpa=Y&tpe=I&lev0=0&levsut0=0&lev1=1&levsut1=1&ne1=1&es0=S&es1=S&ms=S&ne=1&nlg=3&ts=C&ccp=652|title=Dipartimento per gli Affari Interni e Territoriali|website=elezionistorico.interno.gov.it|accessdate=14 August 2018}} He did not stand for re-election in 1999 and briefly left politics.{{cite web|url=http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/1999/07/27/il-piemonte-lascia-il-senatur-basta-con.html|title=Il Piemonte lascia il senatur Basta con Milano padrona - la Repubblica.it|date=27 July 1999 |publisher=|accessdate=14 August 2018}} Farassino was finally regional minister for Piedmontese Identity from 2004 to 2005.{{cite web|url=http://www.regioni.it/news/2004/01/21/20-gen-regioni-piemonte-ghigo-presenta-nuova-giunta-dopo-rimpasto-75558|title=20 gen REGIONI: PIEMONTE; GHIGO PRESENTA NUOVA GIUNTA DOPO RIMPASTO|date=15 August 2018|publisher=|accessdate=14 August 2018}}{{cite web|url=http://www.consiglioregionale.piemonte.it/pubblicazioni/inforegione/2904/01-xxix/nuoviass.htm|title=Presentati in Consiglio i nuovi assessori|website=www.consiglioregionale.piemonte.it|accessdate=14 August 2018}}
