Dr. Guarnieri made his most famous discovery in 1892 while examining thin tissue cells damaged by smallpox. He named these protein masses Cytorrhyctes variolae ("the cell destroyer of smallpox"){{Cite book|last=Williams|first=Gareth|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=XR3uCwAAQBAJ&q=Giuseppe+Guarnieri&pg=PA10|title=Angel of Death: The Story of Smallpox|date=2010-05-17|publisher=Springer|isbn=978-0-230-29319-9|location=Hampshire, UK|pages=10|language=en}} but they were eventually properly identified and named Guarnieri bodies.{{cite book |author1=Forbis, Pat |author2=Bartolucci, Susan L. |author3=Stedman, Thomas Lathrop |title=Stedman's medical eponyms |publisher=Lippincott Williams & Wilkins |location=Hagerstwon, MD |year=2005 |pages=294 |isbn=0-7817-5443-7 }}
