The viaduct was completed in 1849 and the line was opened to Limpet Mill railway station.{{Cite news |date=1848-11-13 |title=Aberdeen Railway |pages=1 |work=Brechin Advertiser |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001546/18491113/010/0001 |access-date=2022-06-17}} In June 1884, work began to replace the wooden arches with a new iron deck. The contractor for the project was Blakie Brothers of Aberdeen. During the reconstruction, a single track remained operational. The work was completed in February 1885 at a cost of approximately £28,000.{{Cite news |date=1885-02-12 |title=Completion of Glenury Viaduct |pages=1 |work=Stonehaven Journal |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001271/18850212/029/0001 |access-date=2022-06-18}}
In the late 1970s, the viaduct was refurbished. The deteriorating iron trestles supporting the deck were enclosed in concrete and timber decking was replaced with steel.{{Cite news |date=1976-02-06 |title=Work to start on Glenury viaduct |pages=1 |work=The Press and Journal |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000578/19760206/049/0001 |access-date=2022-06-18}}
