GlobalPost Media Corporation is an American digital journalism company and former news website that focuses on international news. Founded on January 12, 2009 by Philip S. Balboni and Charles M. Sennott, its stated mission is "to redefine international news for the digital age." GlobalPost now has 64 correspondents worldwide following the kidnapping and beheading of James Foley, an event which has raised questions about GlobalPost's role in sending unsupported personnel into conflict zones.{{cite news |title=Execution of U.S. journalist reveals the changing business of war coverage |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/media-violence/execution-of-u-s-journalist-reveals-the-changing-business-of-war-coverage-idINL2N0QQ34220140822 |access-date=15 September 2023 |work=Reuters |date=22 August 2014 |language=en |archive-date=October 21, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231021124132/https://www.reuters.com/article/media-violence/execution-of-u-s-journalist-reveals-the-changing-business-of-war-coverage-idINL2N0QQ34220140822 |url-status=live }}{{cite news |title=GlobalPost: Email had threatened James Foley's execution |url=https://www.wmtw.com/article/globalpost-email-had-threatened-james-foley-s-execution/2004094 |access-date=15 September 2023 |work=WMTW |date=20 August 2014 |language=en |archive-date=March 30, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240330101553/https://www.wmtw.com/article/globalpost-email-had-threatened-james-foley-s-execution/2004094 |url-status=live }}{{cite magazine |title=James Foley's Execution Raises Fears for Journalists Whose Kidnappings Remain Secret |url=https://www.vanityfair.com/news/daily-news/2014/08/james-foley-death-families |access-date=15 September 2023 |magazine=Vanity Fair |publisher=Condé Nast |date=20 August 2014 |archive-date=April 1, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230401075825/https://www.vanityfair.com/news/daily-news/2014/08/james-foley-death-families |url-status=live }}

History

In 2009 GlobalPost announced syndication agreements with PBS and CBS. As part of the PBS partnership, GlobalPost correspondents began producing video segments for airing on The PBS NewsHour.{{cite web |last=Romenesko |first=Jim |url=http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/99628/pbs-newshour-globalpost-announce-newsgathering-partnership/ |title="PBS NewsHour," GlobalPost announce newsgathering partnership |publisher=Poynter |access-date=November 27, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131203001000/http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/99628/pbs-newshour-globalpost-announce-newsgathering-partnership/ |archive-date=December 3, 2013 |url-status=dead }} Additional arrangements with media outlets including the New York Daily News, The World Weekly, Times of India, and Newark Star-Ledger offered news organizations unlimited rights to republish GlobalPost content in exchange for a flat service fee. According to GlobalPost ownership, income from their syndication agreements accounted for more than 12-percent of the site's revenue.{{cite web |url=http://www.niemanlab.org/2010/03/the-newsonomics-of-new-news-syndication/ |title=The Newsonomics of new news syndication » Nieman Journalism Lab |publisher=Niemanlab.org |date=March 11, 2010 |access-date=November 27, 2013 |archive-date=March 30, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240330131249/https://www.niemanlab.org/2010/03/the-newsonomics-of-new-news-syndication/ |url-status=live }}

Interest in the site's direct-to-reader paid access options, however, has been lackluster. Within a year of launch GlobalPost had discounted their premium "Passport Service"—which offered access to unique content, but had fewer than 400 subscribers—from $199 to $99 per year.{{cite web |last=Glaser |first=Mark |url=https://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2010/01/globalpost-expands-partnerships-struggles-with-pay-service029 |title=GlobalPost Expands Partnerships, Struggles with Pay Service | Mediashift |publisher=PBS |date=January 29, 2010 |access-date=November 27, 2013 |archive-date=December 2, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131202230146/http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2010/01/globalpost-expands-partnerships-struggles-with-pay-service029 |url-status=live }} A second price cut the same year discounted the subscription rate to less than $30.{{cite web |last=Mitchell |first=Bill |url=http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/business-news/newspay/104514/globalpost-to-test-soft-meter-with-journalism-online/ |title=GlobalPost to Test 'Soft Meter' with Journalism Online |publisher=Poynter |date=July 22, 2010 |access-date=November 27, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131202232217/http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/business-news/newspay/104514/globalpost-to-test-soft-meter-with-journalism-online/ |archive-date=December 2, 2013 |url-status=dead }}
