The Global Reporting Centre (GRC) is an independent news organization focused on innovating global journalism, based out of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Its model works by pairing scholars, leading journalists and news organizations to cover neglected stories around the world.{{cite web|access-date=3 March 2017|url=https://www.poynter.org/2016/global-reporting-centre-a-new-nonprofit-wants-to-tell-the-worlds-biggest-untold-stories/419695/|title=Global Reporting Centre, a new nonprofit, wants to tell the world's biggest untold stories}}
Founded by Peter W. Klein, it grew from the International Reporting Program (now called the Global Reporting Program) based at the University of British Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Writing, and Media.{{cite news|date=5 December 2014|last=Lederman|first=Marsha|access-date=6 July 2015|url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/ubc-journalism-director-looks-to-philanthropy-to-fund-reporting-centre/article21980911/|title=UBC journalism director looks to philanthropy to fund reporting centre|newspaper=The Globe and Mail}}
Projects
In 2018, the Global Reporting Centre received a $2.5 million grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for ‘Hidden Costs of Global Supply Chains,’ a multi-year project bringing together researchers, journalists, students, and media broadcasters to investigate “corruption, labour abuses and environmental impact hidden within global supply chains.” {{cite web |title=A project on the dark side of supply chains |url=https://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/society-societe/stories-histoires/story-histoire-eng.aspx?story_id=272 |website=Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council |publisher=Government of Canada |access-date=15 September 2023}} The organization has also partnered with the Center for Investigative Reporting to report on a digital dumping ground in China.{{cite web|access-date=3 March 2017|url=https://www.revealnews.org/episodes/americas-digital-dumping-ground/|title=America's digital dumping ground}} In 2016, the Global Reporting Centre received funding from the Aga Khan Foundation to profile efforts to wipe out Rh Disease and explore it as a public health issue.{{cite web|access-date=3 March 2017|url=http://www.akfc.ca/en/get-involved/reporting-fellowship/meet-the-fellows|title=Aga Khan Foundation Canada}} The resulting story by Jennifer Yang was published in the Toronto Star.{{cite web |title=She was 'the woman who loses all the babies.' During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Global Reporting Centre partnered with the Associated Press and the PBS series FRONTLINE to investigate the medical supply crisis as part of its work on global supply chains.
