Globi is a Swiss cartoon character occasionally referred to as Switzerland's Mickey Mouse.{{cite web |url=http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/archive/Swiss_Mickey_Mouse_turns_75.html?cid=666192 |title=Globi the parrot, the Swiss "Mickey Mouse", turns 75 |publisher=swissinfo.ch |date=2007-07-23 |access-date=2014-04-08 |archive-date=7 April 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140407113208/http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/archive/Swiss_Mickey_Mouse_turns_75.html?cid=666192 |url-status=dead }} He is pictured as an anthropomorphic blue parrot with a yellow beak wearing a black beret and a pair of red and black checkered trousers.{{cite web|url=http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/archive/Museum_honours_popular_parrot.html?cid=666120 |title=Museum honours popular parrot |publisher=swissinfo.ch |date=2003-02-01 |access-date=2014-04-08}} He was created by the Swiss cartoonist Robert Lips, as an advertising character for the Swiss department store Globus in 1932 for the company's 25th anniversary. His name was originally planned as "Kimbukku", but he was later renamed Globi after the local Basel German (Baseldytsch) dialect word for the department store that created him.{{cite web|url=http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/culture/Globi_starts_going_global.html?cid=31248 |title=Popular children's cartoon character Globi appears in English translation for the first time. |publisher=swissinfo.ch |date=2009-09-25 |accessdate=2014-04-08}}
History
He initially appeared in a cartoon strip called Der Globi, and later appeared in a cartoon picture-book form called Globi's World Voyage in 1935.{{cite web |title=Globi – seit 80 Jahren die erfolgreichste aktive Schweizer Kinderbuchfigur |url=http://globi.ch/files/80JahreGlobi_VorstellgDE%2BAT_low.pdf |website=Globi Verlag |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120907063532/http://globi.ch/files/80JahreGlobi_VorstellgDE+AT_low.pdf |archive-date=7 September 2012 |language=de}} By 1944, the character gained so much popularity that Globus created a separate company for their mascot, and in 1948 Globi had sold over one million picture books. He was introduced in other markets such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Brazil, but did not do as well. In the 1970s, he was accused of being sexist, racist, and promoting violence, which was based on the attitudes of the 1940s and 1950s, but the books in question were then withdrawn and revised.{{Cite web|url=https://www.watson.ch/!197051937|title=Globi: Der cholerische Spassvogel jagt jetzt "Räuber und Unholde"|website=Watson}}
