The Golden Melody Awards ({{zh|t=金曲獎|p=Jīnqǔ Jiǎng|s=金曲奖}}), commonly abbreviated as GMA, is an honor awarded by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture to recognize outstanding achievement in the Mandarin, Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka, and Formosan-languages popular and traditional music industry. The GMAs are awarded on the basis of votes by members of jury, and it has constantly been recognized as the equivalent to the Grammy Awards in Chinese-speaking world.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=bx7ac1BC8lIC&q=chinese+language+grammy+golden+melody+award&pg=PA45|title=Divine Soul Mind Body Healing and Transmission System Special Edition: The Divine Way to Heal You, Humanity, Mother Earth, and All Universes|last1=Sha|first1=Zhi Gang|last2=Beckwith|first2=Michael Bernard|date=2009-11-10|publisher=Simon and Schuster|isbn=9781439183298|language=en}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-lam-hsiao-sweep-top-prizes-at-chinese-grammys-2013jul06-story.html|title=Lam, Hsiao sweep top prizes at Chinese Grammys|agency=Associated Press|work=sandiegouniontribune.com|access-date=2017-07-10|language=en-US}}{{Cite news|url=http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/singaporean-singer-songwriter-jj-lin-bags-best-composer-award-at-27th-golden-melody|title=Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin bags Best Male Singer, Best Composer at the 27th Golden Melody Awards|last=hermesauto|date=2016-06-25|work=The Straits Times|access-date=2017-07-10|language=en}}{{Cite news|url=http://english.cw.com.tw/article/article.action?id=1623|title=An Opportunity to turn Taiwan into the Cannes of Asia|Insight|2017-06-23|web only|work=CommonWealth Magazine|access-date=2017-07-10|language=zh-TW}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/entertainment/2007-06/17/content_895984.htm|title=Nicky Lee, Jolin Tsai win Mandarin pop music awards|website=www.chinadaily.com.cn|access-date=2017-07-10}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/85650|title=Malaysian scoops top honour at 'Chinese Grammys'|date=2008-07-06|work=Malaysiakini|access-date=2017-07-10|language=en-GB}} It shares recognition of the music industry as that of the other performance awards such as the Golden Bell Awards (television) and the Golden Horse Awards (motion pictures).

In 1997, the awards were split into separate honors for popular music and traditional music.{{cite news |title=Fine-tuned Melody |url=https://taiwantoday.tw/news.php?post=26457&unit=20,29,29,35&unitname=Taiwan-Review&postname=Fine-tuned-Melody |access-date=22 July 2019 |work=Taiwan Today |date=1 October 2014}} The two awards became distinct ceremonies in 2007.{{cite news |title=Traditional arts and music honored at Golden Melody Awards |url=https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3242036 |access-date=22 July 2019 |work=Taiwan News |date=30 August 2017}} Starting in 2014, the Golden Melody Awards for traditional music has been awarded by the National Center for Traditional Arts, another division of the Ministry of Culture.{{cite news |last1=Yen |first1=William |title=A country's performing arts reflect its democracy: culture minister |url=http://focustaiwan.tw/search/201907200010.aspx |access-date=22 July 2019 |agency=Central News Agency |date=20 July 2019}} Republished as {{cite news |title=Performing arts indicate democracy, official says |url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2019/07/21/2003719053 |access-date=22 July 2019 |work=Taipei Times |date=21 July 2019}}
