In 1525 Gomes de Sequeira was pilot of a small ship captained by Diogo da Rocha, when in the Molucca Passage it was driven 200 to 300 leagues to the northeast by a storm to a large island. The island was given the name Ilha de Gomes de Sequeira. In 1975 William A. Lessa identified the island as Ulithi in the Caroline Islands.{{cite web|title=The Portuguese Discovery of the Isles of Sequeira|url=https://micronesica.org/sites/default/files/the_portuguese_discovery_of_the_isles_of_sequeira_by_lessa_w.a._-micronesica_vol.11_no.1_jul._1975_o.pdf|publisher=Micronesica vol.11 no.1 July 1975 pages 35-70 | last1=Lessa| first1=William A.}}
