{{Transliteration|ko|rr|Gomusin}} ({{Korean|hangul=고무신}}; {{IPA|ko|komuɕʰin}}) are traditional Korean shoes made of rubber. The shoes are wide, with low heels. {{Transliteration|ko|rr|Gomusin}} for men were modeled after "gatsin" (갖신), and ones for women were danghye (당혜). {{Transliteration|ko|rr|Gomusin}} first appeared in the early 20th century. They were much easier to keep clean than danghye and jipsin (straw shoes) and they could be worn when it rains. Therefore, {{Transliteration|ko|rr|gomusin}} gained a popularity and replaced traditional shoes.{{Cite web|title = There's no business like shoe business| date=November 18, 2007 |url = http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2882884|accessdate = December 15, 2015}}{{Cite web|title='고무신' – 네이트 백과사전 |url=http://100.nate.com/dicsearch/pentry.html?s=K&i=236485&v=42 |date=June 10, 2011 |accessdate=December 15, 2015 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110610043214/http://100.nate.com/dicsearch/pentry.html?s=K&i=236485&v=42 |archivedate=June 10, 2011 }}
History
It is purported that the first man to wear {{Transliteration|ko|rr|gomusin}} was Sunjong of Korea, the last emperor of Joseon. From 1938 to 1945, the Japanese colonial régime restricted the wearing of national dress including gomusin. From 1945 to the end of the Korean War the now legalized shoes became very popular. After 1960, while the manufacture of {{Transliteration|ko|rr|gomusin}} became more sophisticated and more appealing styles were able to proliferate, gomusin became less common in everyday dress.{{cite web|last1=한국민족문화대백과|title=고무신의 역사|url=http://terms.naver.com/entry.nhn?docId=567431&cid=46631&categoryId=46631|website=네이버 지식백과}}
{{Transliteration|ko|rr|Gomusin}} are made by mixing rubber, leather, and cloth. This is likely the cause of their decline in popularity: they are relatively heavy and unergonomic, making them uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time.{{Cite web|last=김|first=지용|title=(약수터) 운동화 패션|url=http://www.mdilbo.com/detail/WYXZ2h/437689|access-date=April 12, 2021|website=무등일보|language=ko}}
