Name
"Gundawindi", the name of the town the school was located in, and thereby the school itself, was derived from the "Gundawindi pastoral run" (c.1838), which in turn was thought to be derived from an expression used by the local Indigenous Australian community referring to 'wild duck' or a 'resting place for birds'.{{Cite web|title=Goondiwindi|website=Goondiwindi Regional Council (www.grc.qld.gov.au)|url=https://www.visitgoondiwindiregion.com/Our-towns/Goondiwindi|language=en|access-date=21 February 2025|archive-url=https://archive.today/20250220235620/https://www.visitgoondiwindiregion.com/Our-towns/Goondiwindi|archive-date=20 February 2025|url-status=live|df=dmy}}
History

The then Queensland Education Minister, Jack Pizzey, at the "State Rural School 1960" speech night, promised “a brand new high school for Goondiwindi when secondary enrolments reached 100, provided 10 students were prepared to continue into senior schooling level”.{{Cite news|title=Parents accept challenge|date=17 February 1961|page=7|newspaper=Courier Mail (www.couriermail.com.au)|url=https://ia800108.us.archive.org/23/items/parents-accept-challenge-1961-courier-mail/Parents%20Accept%20Challenge%20%281961%29%20Courier%20Mail.pdf|language=en|access-date=20 February 2025}} In the following year this target was achieved, with the school achieving 107 enrolments with 10 students pledging to continue to the senior years. The school was one of the numerous civic improvements to occur in Goondiwindi between the 1920s and 1960s,{{Cite web |title=Goondiwindi {{!}} Queensland Places |url=https://www.queenslandplaces.com.au/goondiwindi|access-date=20 February 2025|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240313232437/https://www.queenslandplaces.com.au/goondiwindi|archive-date=13 March 2024|publisher=The University of Queensland|url-status=live}} opening on 28 January 1964,{{Cite web|title=Opening and closing dates of Queensland schools|website=Queensland Department of Education (www.education.qld.gov.au)|url=https://education.qld.gov.au/about-us/history/school-anniversaries/opening-closing-dates|language=en|access-date=19 February 2025|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241122005819/https://education.qld.gov.au/about-us/history/school-anniversaries/opening-closing-dates|archive-date=22 November 2024|url-status=live|df=dmy}} with an enrolment of 178 students by February the very same year.{{Cite web|title=School History|url=http://www.goondiwishs.eq.edu.au/schoolhistory.htm|website=Goondiwindi State High School|access-date=20 February 2025|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080719103907/http://goondiwishs.eq.edu.au/schoolhistory.htm|archive-date=19 July 2008|url-status=dead|df=dmy}}
