Controversies

In April 2011, Pozareport.si revealed that the Maribor police department was investigating an illegal betting organization, with six individuals already detained.{{Cite web |url= https://2011.pozareport.si/post/387184/ilegalne-stavnice-zaslisanje-goran-sukalo-danes-na-mariborskem-sodiscu |title= Ilegalne stavnice, zaslišanje: Goran Šukalo danes na mariborskem sodišču |website= pozareport.si |language= sl|date=11 May 2011|access-date=30 June 2021}}{{cite web |title=Stavničarska "mafija" v priporu |url=http://www.vecer.com/portali/vecer/v1/default.asp?kaj=3&id=2011042805641575 |website=Večer |access-date=30 June 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120317080135/http://web.vecer.com/portali/vecer/v1/default.asp?kaj=3&id=2011042805641575 |language=sl |date=28 April 2011|archive-date=17 March 2012}} The police also revealed that two other collaborators were still at large and that one of those was Goran Šukalo, who allegedly invested over €1.9 million in the organization, the majority of which he collected from other professional players. Šukalo categorically denied his involvement in the matter,{{Cite web |url= https://www.nogomania.com/Novica/Sukalo-Obtozbe-so-neresnicne |title= Šukalo: Obtožbe so neresnične |publisher= Nogomania |language= sl | date=28 April 2011 | access-date = 25 July 2013}}{{Cite web |url= http://www.msv-duisburg.de/main.asp?reiter=aktuelles_p&bgi=yes&mode=aktuell&aid=3235 |title= Vorwürfe gegen Sukalo: "Stehen zu 100 Prozent hinter Goran" |publisher= MSV Duisburg |language= de |access-date= 28 April 2011 |archive-date= 28 December 2013 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20131228151831/http://www.msv-duisburg.de/main.asp?reiter=aktuelles_p&bgi=yes&mode=aktuell&aid=3235 |url-status= dead }} however, it was revealed by the media and the police that investigators had been tapping the phones of the four persons in custody at the time and had recorded a conversation between Šukalo and the leader of the illegal organization [Kosta Turner] when Šukalo revealed that another football player, Nastja Čeh, was still owing him €73,000 and was avoiding payment.{{Cite web |url= https://www.24ur.com/novice/crna-kronika/med-imeni-najbolj-izstopa-sukalo.html |title= Med imeni najbolj izstopa Šukalo |website= 24ur.com |language= sl | date=28 April 2011 | access-date = 25 July 2013}} On 11 May 2011, Šukalo had his first preliminary hearing in Maribor district court where he denied his implications and pleaded not guilty.{{Cite web |url= https://www.rtvslo.si/sport/nogomet/sukalo-pred-sodniki-le-15-minut/257263 |title= Šukalo pred sodniki le 15 minut |publisher= RTV Slovenija |language= sl | date=11 May 2011 | access-date = 25 July 2013|author=A. In January 2012 the general prosecutor of the District Court in Maribor made an indictment of six individuals, written on 30 pages, one of them being Šukalo.{{Cite web |url= https://www.nogomania.com/Novica/Obtoznica-je-pravnomocna |title= Obtožnica je pravnomočna |publisher= Nogomania |language= sl |date=13 January 2012 |author=Uredništvo |access-date=30 June 2021}} Šukalo was said to be the leader of the German part of the illegal betting organization from Maribor and that he was recruiting new members among other football players and friends from Germany.{{Cite web |url= https://www.rtvslo.si/sport/nogomet/milijoni-evrov-slovenskih-nogometasev-v-nezakoniti-stavnici-kosta/274444 |title= Milijoni evrov slovenskih nogometašev v nezakoniti stavnici Kosta |publisher= RTV Slovenija |language= sl |date=10 January 2012 |access-date=30 June 2021|author=To.
