Grahovo ({{IPA|sl|ɡɾaˈxɔːʋɔ|pron}} or {{IPA|sl|ɡɾaˈxoːʋɔ|}}, {{langx|de|Grachowo}}Leksikon občin kraljestev in dežel zastopanih v državnem zboru, vol. 6: Kranjsko. 1906. Vienna: C. Kr. Dvorna in Državna Tiskarna, p. 120.) is a village on the eastern shores of Lake Cerknica in the Municipality of Cerknica in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia.[http://www.cerknica.si/ Cerknica municipal site]

Name

Grahovo was attested in written sources in 1355 and 1499 as Grochaw (and as Grocha in 1438 and 1487, and Grathaw in 1448). The name is probably derived from the personal name Grah, which is still preserved as a surname in Slovenia and is probably borrowed from the Old High German name Gracco. The place name would thus mean 'Grah's (village)'. Another possible derivation is from the common noun *grahovišče 'pea field' via the contracted form *grahovše. Direct derivation from the Slovene common noun grah 'pea' is unlikely because of the rarity of such names and the suffixation pattern.Snoj, Marko. 2009. Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, p. 151. The name Grahova vas is also occasionally found in some dated sources.{{cite news|title=Rada bi izvedela za mojega brata Matevža Zalar|url=http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-8MGCY64D/23f953e0-72d5-4ebc-ad85-82a4937a8f85/PDF|access-date=April 12, 2018|work=Glas naroda|date=July 5, 1919|page=6}}{{cite book|title=Rangordnung der Schülerinnen an der städtischen vierklassigen Volksschule für Mädchen in Laibach am Schlusse des Schuljahres 1880/1|date=1881|publisher=Verlag der städtischen vierklassigen Mädchen-Volksschule|location=Ljubljana|page=2|url=https://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:DOC-8Z2HLX4C/fe274699-a570-49ea-897c-ddcf0287b219/PDF|access-date=April 12, 2018}}{{cite news|title=Services Conducted for Frank Lesar, 73|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/19164126/frank_lesar_18711944/|newspaper=Marshfield News-Herald|date=August 23, 1944|page=6|via = Newspapers.com|access-date = April 12, 2018}} {{Open access}}

Memorials

In 1990, a memorial to poet France Balantič was erected in front of the local school.[http://www.uradni-list.si/_pdf/2004/Ur/u2004100.pdf Official Journal of the Republic of Slovenia No. 100 13 Sept. 2004 p. 12079]

In 2014, another memorial was erected to 32 Slovene Home Guard members that were killed in the 1943 attack by the Slovene Partisans. The choice to erect it on anniversary date of the 1941 Axis invasion of Yugoslavia was met with criticism by the Slovene Partisan veterans association, Primorski Puntarji, and some left-wing political parties, which accused right-wing political leaders of trying to rehabilitate collaborationism.[http://www.rtvslo.si/slovenija/v-grahovem-najprej-poklon-zrtvam-nacizma-nato-blagoslov-spomenika-domobrancem/333932 V Grahovem najprej poklon žrtvam nacizma, nato blagoslov spomenika domobrancem], MMC RTV Slovenia, 6 April 2014 In addition to the left-wing veterans associations, a petition against the second monument was also signed by the TIGR veterans association.[http://www.rtvslo.si/slovenija/zveza-zdruzenj-borcev-protestira-proti-spomeniku-domobrancem-v-grahovem/333728 Zveza Združenj borcev protestira proti spomeniku domobrancem v Grahovem], MMC RTV Slovenia, 3 April 2014 The monument was vandalized on April 16, 2014{{cite news |title=Sramota: v Grahovem že onečastili spomenik s svastiko |url=http://novice.najdi.si/predogled/novica/e519cf20587653f1b2aff04e5a1d4f49/Politikis/Slovenija/SRAMOTA-V-GRAHOVEM-%C5%BDE-ONE%C4%8CASTILI-SPOMENIK-S-SVASTIKO-A-podivjani-levi%C4%8Darji-se-z-nacisti%C4%8Dnimi-forami-spravljajo-celo-na-svoje |access-date=April 11, 2020 |work=Politikis |date=April 17, 2014}} and again on April 11, 2020.{{cite news |title=Barbarsko: Vandali so ponoči oskrunili spomenik domobrancem v Grahovem! |url=http://www.demokracija.si/fokus/barbarsko-vandali-so-ponoci-oskrunili-spomenik-domobrancem-v-grahovem.html |access-date=April 11, 2020 |work=Demokracija |date=April 11, 2020}}

Church

The Grahovo parish church, built southeast of the settlement in 1992, is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and belongs to the Ljubljana Archdiocese. The original church dating to 1671 was burned down during the Partisan attack on 24 November 1943. The people of the village were not permitted to remove the ruins until 1960, and permission was not granted to build a new church until after Slovenian independence in 1991.[http://www.druzina.si/icd/spletnastran.nsf/all/39E5492BCFD0B078C12572030034F818?OpenDocument Družina RC Church in Slovenia Journal website][http://www.avemaria-izlemonta.com/arhiv/AM-10-06.pdf Ave Maria newsletter 6(102), June 2010, p. 2.]
