History

The award for Best Global Music Performance, reserved for international performers exhibiting "non-European, indigenous traditions", was first presented at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, held on January 31, 2022. The new award category is an addition to the Global Music field, which also includes the Best Global Music Album category which was introduced in 1992 as Best World Music Album. (In 2020, its name was changed to Best Global Music Album){{Cite web|last=Aswad|first=Jem|date=2020-11-03|title=Grammy Awards Change Name of 'World Music' Category to 'Global Music' to Address 'Connotations of Colonialism'|url=https://variety.com/2020/music/news/grammy-awards-change-world-music-to-global-1234821922/|access-date=2020-11-03|website=Variety|language=en-US}}

Beginning with the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024, a sister category, Best African Music Performance, was established to specifically honor the work of African artists.{{cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/lists/new-grammys-categories-2024/|title=Here’s Everything We Know About the 3 New Grammy Categories for 2024|magazine=Billboard|author=Paul Grein|date=June 13, 2023|access-date=June 14, 2023}}
