Honors in several categories are presented at the ceremony annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to "honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position".{{cite web|url=http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy|title=Overview|access-date=July 8, 2011|publisher=National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110717182938/http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy|archive-date=July 17, 2011|url-status=live}}

According to the category description guide for the 52nd Grammy Awards, the award was presented to "vocal or instrumental Native American music albums containing at least 51% playing time of newly recorded music", with the intent to honor recordings of a more "traditional nature".{{cite web|url=http://www2.grammy.com/PDFs/Recording_Academy/52guide.pdf|title=52nd OEP Category Description Guide|access-date=July 15, 2010|page=5|publisher=National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091027172820/http://www.grammy.com/PDFs/Recording_Academy/52guide.pdf|archive-date=October 27, 2009}}

As performing artists, Bill Miller and Mary Youngblood share the record for the most wins in this category, with two each. Thomas Wasinger holds the record for the most wins as a producer, with three. The group Black Lodge Singers holds the record for the most nominations without a win, with seven. In 2011, the category Best Native American Music Album was eliminated along with thirty others due to a major overhaul by the Recording Academy. Four additional categories in the American Roots Music field were eliminated (Best Contemporary Folk Album, Best Hawaiian Music Album, Best Traditional Folk Album, Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album).{{cite news|title=Grammys nix Cajun, Zydeco category|last=Daigle|first=Cody|url=http://www.zydecoonline.com/dev/index.php?name=News&file=print&sid=448|location=Lafayette, Louisiana|work=The Advertiser|date=April 7, 2011|access-date=April 16, 2011|publisher=Gannett Company|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110718162310/http://www.zydecoonline.com/dev/index.php?name=News&file=print&sid=448|archive-date=July 18, 2011}}{{cite news|url=http://www.fox44now.com/story/14430501/grammy-for-best-zydeco-or-cajun-album-goes-to-chubby-carrier-and-the-bayou-swamp-band?redirected=true|title=Grammy for Best Zydeco or Cajun Album Goes to Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band|date=2011|access-date=April 27, 2011|publisher=WFFF-TV|location=Burlington, Vermont}} Native American works will now be eligible for the Best Regional Roots Music Album category.
