Background
The song's creation began in March or April 2012. KeY Wane says that Big Sean flew him out to Los Angeles; they went to the studio and were working on the Detroit mixtape and the album. Big Sean was quoted as saying, "Man I recorded these records on my phone about this really good song that I have an idea for." Then he texted Wane the reference; Wane listened to it and was quoted as saying, "Man this could be a really good song."{{cite web|title=KeY Wane Talks Producing Big Sean's "Guap|url=http://www.xxlmag.com/features/2012/10/key-wane-talks-producing-big-seans-guap-detroits-reception-and-hall-of-fame/|publisher=XXL Magazine |access-date=26 October 2012}} The word guap has its origins as a slang for money.{{Cite web|title = GUAP meaning - What does GUAP mean - Definition of GUAP|url = http://wordsoverweb.com/slang/GUAP|website = wordsoverweb.com|access-date = 2015-08-12}}{{Cite web|title = Cop These adidas Pro Models If You Don't Have Big Sean Money - SneakerNews.com|url = http://sneakernews.com/2015/07/30/cop-these-adidas-pro-models-if-you-dont-have-big-sean-money/|website = Sneaker News| date=30 July 2015 |access-date = 2015-08-12}}
