GuildHE Research is an organisation that provides training and support for researchers and students in Britain. It is a sub-association of GuildHE.{{cite web|url=http://www.guildhe.ac.uk/about/what-does-guild-he-do/associations/|title=GuildHE: Associations|website=www.guildhe.ac.uk|language=en-US|access-date=2017-03-06}}

GuildHE Research was known as the Consortium for Research Excellence, Support and Training (or CREST) from its inception in 2010 until March 2019.

The organisation was set up with strategic development funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, which was matched by phased subscriptions from members.{{cite web|url=https://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201012/cmselect/cmsctech/618/618vw18.htm|title=House of Commons - Spending Review 2010 - HC 618: Written evidence submitted by GuildHE (SR 18)|website=www.publications.parliament.uk|publisher=The Committee Office, House of Commons|language=en|access-date=2017-03-06}} It is currently self-sustained, receiving funding from member organisations.

Activities

GuildHE Research is particularly focussed on providing support and training to researchers at smaller organisations who might otherwise have less access to training and networks.{{cite web|url=http://crest.ac.uk/about/|title=About CREST|website=crest.ac.uk|language=en-US|access-date=2017-03-06}} This builds upon the concept of there being "islands of research excellence", an idea that arose from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.{{cite report|url=http://www.csmc.scieng.ed.ac.uk/docs/open/PaperD_REF.pdf|title=Research Excellence Framework Consultation (Paper D)|date=September 2009|page=8|author=Gerald McLaren}}

The organisation organises symposia, organises training, and curates and disseminates information on research policy such as the Research Excellence Framework.

CREST was a signatory of concordats such as the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, and the Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research.{{cite web|url=https://www.vitae.ac.uk/policy/vitae-concordat-vitae-2011.pdf|title=Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, UK 2008 — Vitae Website|website=www.vitae.ac.uk|access-date=2017-03-06}}{{cite report|url=http://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/policy-and-analysis/reports/Documents/2012/the-concordat-to-support-research-integrity.pdf|title=Concordat to Support Research Integrity|date=July 2012|publisher=Universities UK}}{{cite web|url=http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/Publications/policy/perConcordat/|title=Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research - Research Councils UK|website=www.rcuk.ac.uk|language=en|access-date=2017-03-06}}

Open access and open data

GuildHE Research have investigated how smaller institutions can make research available via open access and open data.{{Cite news|url=https://researchdata.jiscinvolve.org/wp/2016/06/28/crest-research-data-shared-service/|title=CREST and the research data shared service|last=Persad|first=Rachel|date=2016-06-28|work=Research data management|access-date=2017-03-06|language=en-US}}{{cite web|url=http://ulcc.ac.uk/news/guildhe-goes-open-source|title=GuildHE goes Open Source|website=ulcc.ac.uk|access-date=2017-03-06}} In 2014, Jisc provided the organisation with funding to develop a research data management system to support smaller and specialist institutions.{{cite web|url=https://www.jisc.ac.uk/rd/projects/research-data-spring|title=Research data spring|website=Jisc|access-date=2017-03-06}} This was followed, in 2016, by involvement in the pilot of a research data shared service.{{cite web|url=https://www.jisc.ac.uk/rd/projects/research-data-shared-service|title=Research data shared service|website=Jisc|access-date=2017-03-06}}{{cite web|url=http://www.dcc.ac.uk/blog/jisc-research-data-spring-takes-its-next-leap-forward|title=Jisc research data spring takes its next leap forward|website=www.dcc.ac.uk|publisher=Digital Curation Centre|language=en|access-date=2017-03-06}}
