Kayak was a line of x86-based, optionally dual-processor workstation computers released by Hewlett-Packard from 1997 until the acquisition of Compaq in 2002. History
Hewlett-Packard introduced the Kayak line in September 1997, alongside their Brio line of small office/home office desktops. Models in the Kayak line initially featured Intel's Pentium II processors;{{cite journal | last=Kehoe | first=Louise | date=September 10, 1997 | url=https://www.proquest.com/docview/248508294/ | title=Hewlett-Packard aims to lead business PC market | journal=Financial Times | page=41 | via=ProQuest}} later models featured Pentium II Xeons,{{cite journal | last=Mahon | first=Luke | date=October 1998 | url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A53199489/GPS?sid=wikipedia | title=Hewlett-Packard Kayak XU | journal=PC Magazine | location=United Kingdom | publisher=ZDNet | page=62 | via=Gale}} Pentium IIIs,{{cite journal | date=August 30, 1999 | url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A55622251/GPS?sid=wikipedia | title=HP slashes PC prices | journal=PC Week | publisher=Ziff-Davis | page=35 | via=Gale}} Pentium III Xeons,{{cite journal | date=May 3, 1999 | url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A54988922/GPS?sid=wikipedia | title=Crece la familia Kayak | trans-title=Kayak family grows | journal=PC Semanal | publisher=Servicios Editoriales Sayrols | volume=15 | issue=353 | page=6 | via=Gale | language=Spanish}} and Pentium 4s.{{cite journal | last=Resnick | first=Mason | author2=Russell Hart | date=July 2001 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=BJohcG6y9csC&pg=PA90 | title=Computers | journal=American Photo | publisher=Hachette Filipacchi Médias | volume=XII | issue=4 | page=90 | via=Google Books}} The Kayak line was introduced expressly to compete with Compaq, then the largest global manufacturer of personal computers, in the scientific computing and professional 3D graphics markets—particularly with Compaq's Professional Workstation line. The Kayak served as HP's introduction to the Wintel workstation market; they had previously only catered to the Unix set with their RISC-based 9000 line of performance workstations.{{cite journal | last=Vijayan | first=Jaikumar | date=September 15, 1997 | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RDHzF9saQ0AC&pg=PT2 | title=HP plays both sides of the fence; unveils NT, Unix workstations | journal=InfoWorld | publisher=IDG Publications | volume=31 | issue=37 | page=3 | via=Google Books}}
HP came to dominate the Wintel workstation segment with the Kayak by the turn of the millennium. However, in late 2001, they were eclipsed by Dell and their Precision workstations.{{cite web | date=January 2, 2002 | url=https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/hp-fights-back-in-workstation-market/ | title=HP fights back in workstation market | work=CNET | publisher=CBS Interactive | archiveurl=https://archive.today/20230731014930/https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/hp-fights-back-in-workstation-market/ | archivedate=July 31, 2023}} In Europe, HP rebranded the Kayak as the HP Workstation with their x4000 model in 2001.{{cite journal | date=June 25, 2001 | url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A76463461/GPS?sid=wikipedia | title=HP Workstation ready for Europe | journal=Printing World | publisher=Haymarket Business | page=18 | via=Gale}} By 2002, HP followed suit in the United States.{{cite journal | date=June 2002 | url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A88990495/GPS?sid=wikipedia | title=Hewlett-Packard | journal=CADalyst | publisher=Questex | volume=19 | issue=6 | page=36 | via=Gale}}
