Taxonomy and naming
Hakea auriculata was first formally described by botanist Carl Meissner in 1855 as part of the William Jackson Hooker work Hooker's Journal of Botany and Kew Garden Miscellany.{{cite web|url=https://bie.ala.org.au/species/http://id.biodiversity.org.au/node/apni/2911309#names|title=Hakea auriculata Meisn.|access-date=17 October 2018|work=Atlas of Living Australia|publisher=Global Biodiversity Information Facility}}{{cite web |title=Hakea auriculata |url=https://biodiversity.org.au/nsl/services/search?product=APNI&tree.id=&name=Hakea+auriculata+Meisn.&inc._scientific=&inc.scientific=on&inc._cultivar=&inc._other=&max=100&display=apni&search=true |publisher=APNI |access-date=8 February 2019}}
The specific epithet (auriculata) is derived from the Latin word auricula meaning "lobe of the ear" or "little ear"{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page=112}} referring to the shape of the base of the leaf.
Distribution and habitat
Hakea auriculata is endemic to areas along the west coast in the Wheatbelt and Mid West regions of Western Australia between Northampton and Gingin where it grows in sandy heaths and among stony hills and breakaways sometimes over laterite or granite.{{FloraBase|name=Hakea auriculata|id=2131}}{{cite book |editor-last1=Wilson |editor-first1=Annette |editor-last2=Barker |editor-first2=Robyn M. |editor-last3=Haegi |editor-first3=Laurence A. |editor-last4=Barker |editor-first4=William R. |title="Flora of Australia" Vol.17B Hakea to Dryandra |date=1999 |publisher=ABRS-Department of Environment and Heritage |isbn=0-643-06454-0}}
