Allen was born in County Down, educated at Trinity College, Dublin"Alumni Dublinenses : a register of the students, graduates, professors and provosts of Trinity College in the University of Dublin (1593-1860)Burtchaell,G.D/Sadlier,T.U p818: Dublin, Alex Thom and Co, 1935 and ordained in 1850. He was Rector of Killoran from 1862; Archdeacon of Achonry from 1862 to 1883; and a Canon of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin from 1875.
