=Viral Sun bear video=

In 2023, the zoo gained international interest after an online video posted on Douyin platform, had gone viral of 'Angela', one of its female Malaysian sun bears, that was seen standing up straight and waving its paw at the crowd. A number of internet users speculated that the bear was acting too much like a human and pointed out that the bear appeared to have saggy skin folds on its behind, which led to conspiracy theories that the female bear was actually a person inside a fake bear suit.{{Cite news |last=Hawkins |first=Amy |date=2023-07-31 |title=Chinese zoo denies its sun bears are humans dressed in costumes |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/31/chinese-zoo-denies-sun-bears-humans-costumes |access-date=2023-07-31 |issn=0261-3077}}{{Cite news |date=2023-07-31 |title=Hangzhou Zoo: Our sun bears are real, not humans in disguise |language=en-GB |work=BBC News |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-66362970 |access-date=2023-07-31}}{{Cite web |date=2023-08-02 |title=Video of bear at a Chinese zoo has people asking: Is that a bear or human in costume? |url=https://www.today.com/news/chinese-zoo-bear-human-costume-rcna97690 |access-date=2023-08-07 |website=TODAY.com |language=en}}

Hangzhou Zoo however denied this and stated that people "don't understand" the species. Additionally, multiple animal experts from western zoos, including Zoo Miami's animal expert Ron Magill and Canberra's National Zoo and Aquarium wildlife supervisor Sophie Dentrinos, later dismissed the conspiracy theories, and told reporters that they can tell that the bear in Hangzhou zoo was authentic, explaining that this bear species naturally has a lot of loose saggy skin as a natural adaptation against predators, and it wasn't odd for sun bears to be able to stand up straight on their hind legs.{{Cite web |last=Hush • • |first=Chris |date=2023-08-02 |title='It's real': Zoo expert weighs in on viral video showing bear standing on hind legs in China |url=https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/its-real-ron-magill-weighs-in-on-viral-video-showing-bear-standing-on-hind-legs/3084125/ |access-date=2023-08-07 |website=NBC 6 South Florida |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |date=2023-08-03 |title=Zookeeper's verdict on 'fake' bear frenzy |url=https://www.9news.com.au/national/chinese-zoo-sun-bear-update-taronga-zoo/224b489b-550e-4731-b9b4-72dd2d375c74 |access-date=2023-08-07 |website=www.9news.com.au}}{{Cite web |date=2023-08-04 |title=Animal expert weighs in on wild Chinese zoo sun bear claims |url=https://7news.com.au/news/animals/chinese-zoo-sun-bear-100-per-cent-a-bear-animal-expert-says--c-11483322 |access-date=2023-08-07 |website=7NEWS |language=en}}{{Cite news |date=2023-07-31 |title=Sun bears are real, not humans in disguise says Hangzhou Zoo |language=en-GB |work=BBC News |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-66362970 |access-date=2023-08-07}}

After widespread reporting by major media outlets on the controversial video, Hangzhou Zoo soon experienced an increase in attendance numbers by 30% to about 20,000 a day, with some visitors reportedly travelling overnight to see its much-publicized sun bears.{{Cite news |last=Pollard |first=Martin Quin |date=2023-08-02 |title=Tourists flock to Chinese zoo to see 'human-like' bear |language=en |work=Reuters |url=https://www.reuters.com/world/china/tourists-flock-chinese-zoo-see-human-like-bear-2023-08-01/ |access-date=2023-08-07}}
