Biography

She was educated largely in Jakarta.{{cite web|url=http://www.obor.or.id/bukus/bukukarang/Hanna%20Rambe|title=Biodata Penulis-Hanna Rambe|publisher=Yayasan Obor Indonesia|language=id|access-date=16 November 2011|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120425230549/http://www.obor.or.id/bukus/bukukarang/Hanna%20Rambe|archive-date=25 April 2012|df=dmy-all}} In the mid-1960s, she entered the Literature Department at the University of Indonesia where she enrolled in the English language division, but she did not complete her schooling. She began working as a journalist, beginning as a copy-editor at the Indonesian Observer newspaper, and then worked as a translator and reporter for Indonesia Raya until 1974. She also worked as a contributor to the magazine Intisari (1972–1977), and then as a journalist at Mutiara magazine from (1977–1992).{{cite book | title = On the Record: Films Transcripts and Biographical Information – Indonesian Literary Figures Volume 4 | publisher = Lontar | location = Jakarta, Indonesia | year = 2004 }}

According to Jane Miller, Rambe's stories are infused with a strong sense of irony—in "The Love of City People," a country girl is confused when she meets her city relatives and finds out that they care more about their pets than each other.{{cite book | last = Miller | first = Jane | title = Who's Who in Contemporary Women's Writing | publisher = Routledge | location = New York | year = 2000 | isbn = 978-0-415-15980-7 | pages = [https://archive.org/details/whoswhoincontemp0000unse_b9y4/page/267 267–268] | url = https://archive.org/details/whoswhoincontemp0000unse_b9y4/page/267 }}

Rambe's work as a journalist provided her the opportunity to travel and her journeys provided inspiration for her stories. She is also known as an author who researches her subject in detail prior to writing; when preparing Mirah dari Banda she lived for a month in Banda doing research; while writing Seorang Lelaki dari Waimital, Rambe went back and forth to Seram, to the difficult to reach interior of the island.{{cite book | last = Rambe | first = Hanna | title = Mirah dari Banda : sebuah novel | publisher = IndonesiaTera | location = Magelang | year = 2003 |language=id | isbn = 978-979-9375-48-3 }}

According to Korrie Layun Rampan, Hanna Rambe is a mystery novelist who explores history and connects with the issue of fate{{Cite web |title=Biography of Rambe, Hanna, 1940- {{!}} Southeast Asia Digital Library |url=https://sea.lib.niu.edu/islandora/object/SEAImages:YL-PG-020-HANNA-MFE |access-date=2022-07-12 |website=sea.lib.niu.edu |language=en}} as exemplified in Mirah dari Banda.{{cite news |title=Wanita Novelis Indonesia |author=Korrie Layun Rampan |author-link=Korrie Layun Rampan |url=http://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/02/25/0048.html |newspaper=Kompas |location=Jakarta |date=25 February 1996 |access-date=16 November 2011 |language=id |trans-title=Indonesian Female Novelists |archive-date=2 April 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150402151708/http://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/02/25/0048.html |url-status=dead }}

Not all of her works are works of fiction. Her profession as a journalist influenced the form of her writing. Among her other works are biographies: Terhempas Prahara ke Pasifik, Mencari Makna Hidupku (a biography of Ibu Suyatin Kartowijono, a pioneer in the struggle for women’s rights from the 1920s), and Pelayaran Cadik Nusantara (a youth who took a fishing boat alone all the way to Brunei). Today, Hanna Rambe has retired from journalism and spends her days writing as well as teaching English. She is currently working on a three-volume history of Eastern Indonesia in the seventeenth century.{{cite book | last = Rambe | first = Hanna | title = Mirah of Banda | publisher = Lontar | location = Jakarta, Indonesia | year = 2010 | isbn = 978-979-8083-78-5 }}
