Career

His thesis, on the nobility in the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands, was supervised by Henk van Nierop and Wim Blockmans. Cools briefly worked at Leiden University (1999-2003) and the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (2003-2006){{Cite news|title=Geleerde missie|author=Bas Mesters|date=16 Oct 2004|newspaper=NRC Handelsblad|url=https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2004/10/16/geleerde-missie-7706752-a326282}} before taking up a position as a lecturer at the KU Leuven.
