The covers feature original illustrations done in a style that was common for paperbacks of that era, credited to artists such as Robert McGinnis and Glen Orbik.{{cite news|url=https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90183296|title=Hard Case Shows a Soft Spot for Pulp|date=2008-05-05|work=National Public Radio}}

Publication history

Hard Case's list includes both reprints of books from the pulp era (typically labeled Complete and unabridged on the cover), and new novels written for the collection (typically labeled First publication anywhere). The top-selling entries in the series to date have been novels by Stephen King: The Colorado Kid (2005), which later became the basis for the SyFy television series Haven,{{Cite web|url=https://www.variety.com/article/VR1118009301.html?categoryid=14&cs=1|title=Stephen King chills tube again|date=September 28, 2009|last=Schneider|first=Michael|work=Variety|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101019090048/http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118009301.html?categoryid=14&cs=1|archive-date=October 19, 2010|access-date=June 23, 2010|url-status=dead|df=}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Haven-Season-1/15188|title=Haven - Syfy's Hot New Show, Based on Stephen King's {{'}}The Colorado Kid{{'}}, Announced for DVD and Blu-ray|work=TV Shows on DVD|last=Lambert|first=David|date=March 30, 2011|access-date=April 1, 2011|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110402170831/http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Haven-Season-1/15188|archive-date=April 2, 2011|df=}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news/2010/03/31/syfy-celebrates-summer-2010-with-first-ever-thursday-night-reality-bloc/20100331syfy01/|title=Syfy celebrates summer 2010 with first ever Thursday night reality bloc|date=March 31, 2010|work=The Futon Critic|accessdate=June 23, 2010}} Joyland (2013), and Later (2021).

Nine novels published by Hard Case have been nominated for the Edgar Award: In 2005, Little Girl Lost, by Richard Aleas (a pseudonym for Hard Case Crime co-founder Charles Ardai that is both an anagram of Ardai's name and a play on "alias"), was nominated as Best First Novel by an American Author, and Domenic Stansberry's The Confession won the award for Best Paperback Original; in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2023, and 2024 respectively, Allan Guthrie's Kiss Her Goodbye, Russell Hill's Robbie's Wife, Christa Faust's Money Shot, Stephen King's Joyland, Max Allan Collins's Quarry's Blood, and Scott Von Doviak's Lowdown Road were nominated for Best Paperback Original. In 2022, James Kestrel's Five Decembers won the award for Best Novel.{{cite web| url = http://www.theedgars.com/edgarsDB/index.php | title = The Edgar Awards| access-date = 2011-10-30| archive-date = 2012-08-28|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120828005743/http://www.theedgars.com/edgarsDB/index.php|url-status=dead}}{{cite web | url = https://mysterywriters.org/mwa-announce-the-2022-edgar-award-nominations/| title = MWA Announces the 2022 Edgar Award Nominations}}

Max Phillips' Fade to Blonde won the 2005 Shamus Award for Best Paperback Novel of the Year, and Charles Ardai's pseudonymous "Richard Aleas" novel Songs of Innocence won the same award in 2008.{{cite web

Between 2004 and 2010, Hard Case Crime was published through a collaboration between Ardai's company, Winterfall LLC, and Dorchester Publishing. After an announcement in August 2010 that Subterranean Press would be publishing "an exclusive Hard Case Crime volume," starting in 2011, Titan Books replaced Dorchester as publisher of the series.{{citation|title=Hard Case Crime to Relaunch with Titan Publishing|first=Jason|last=Boog|url=http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/hard-case-crime-titan-publishing_b14592|date=October 20, 2010|publisher=GalleyCat|access-date=March 30, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101028221612/http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/hard-case-crime-titan-publishing_b14592|archive-date=October 28, 2010|url-status=dead}}. Two volumes in the series, one reprinting a pair of early Lawrence Block novels, 69 Barrow Street and Strange Embrace, the other a collection of Lawrence Block short stories, Catch and Release, ultimately were published by Subterranean Press.{{cite news|url=http://www.spinetinglermag.com/2010/08/10/hard-case-crime-move-to-subterranean-press/ | title = Hard Case Crime moves to Subterranean Press|archive-url =https://web.archive.org/web/20160304062537/http://www.spinetinglermag.com/2010/08/10/hard-case-crime-move-to-subterranean-press/| archive-date = March 4, 2016 | date = 2010-08-10 | work =Spinetingler| first=Brian| last=Lindenmuth}}

Since the imprint's move to Titan Comics, Hard Case Crime has released comics and graphic novels in the same hard-boiled genre as the book division, such as Charles Ardai's Gun Honey series.{{cite web|url=https://www.cbr.com/gun-honey-charles-ardai-trailer/|title=Gun Honey: Charles Ardai's Debut Graphic Novel Drops a Steamy Trailer|publisher=CBR.com|author=Swanson, Larry|language=en-US|url-status=live|date=August 6, 2021|access-date=May 18, 2024|archive-date=May 18, 2024|archive-url=https://archive.today/20240518163826/https://www.cbr.com/gun-honey-charles-ardai-trailer/}}{{-}}
