Work

In his work, he investigates how algorithms can analyse digital archives{{cite web|url=http://www.newmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/harm-van-den-dorpel-dissociations |title=Dissociations at the New Museum}} and guide the artist in aesthetic decision taking, leading to a symbiosis of man-machine art creation. Using computer programming, he describes traditional notions in art, such as for example the free use of intuition and expression.{{cite web|url=http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/10371/1/bas-van-den-hurk-harm-van-den-dorpel| title=Interview Dazed and Confused| date=13 May 2011}} Conclusions from this research are then fed back in the production of new work. His ultimate goal is to reveal the reasoning structure of his own consciousness, and his implicit associations and assumptions. In this process, he borrows ideas from psychoanalysis, the writing of Jacques Derrida, and Artificial Intelligence (which he studied).{{cite web|url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/harm-van-den-dorpels-post-internet-art/|title=Interview Creators Project|date=18 February 2015 }}
