The genus name of Harmsiodoxa is in honour of Hermann Harms (1870–1942), a German taxonomist and botanist.{{cite book | last=Quattrocchi | first=Umberto | title=CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names, Volume II, D–L | publisher=CRC Press | location=Boca Raton, Florida | year=2000 | isbn=978-0-8493-2676-9}} It was first described and published in H.G.A.Engler (ed.), Pflanzenr., IV, 105(86) on page 260 in 1924.
