Classifying the motive types

The Hartman Personality Profile is based on the notion that all people possess one of four driving "core motives".{{cite book|title=The Color Code|author=Hartman, Taylor|year=1998|isbn=0-684-84376-5|page=36|publisher=Scribner }} The Color Code is based on four types of personality, identified by color: Red, (motivated by power); Blue, (motivated by intimacy); White, (motivated by peace); and Yellow, (motivated by fun).{{cite web |url=http://forum.tufat.com/archive/index.php/t-18989.html |author=Doc7 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120210214421/http://forum.tufat.com/archive/index.php/t-18989.html |archive-date= 2012-02-10}} Although demographic groups vary, Hartman suggests that Reds comprise 25% of the population; Blues 35%; Whites 20%; and Yellows 20%.{{cite book|title=The Color Code|author=Hartman, Taylor|year=1998|isbn=0-684-84376-5|page=40|publisher=Scribner }} There is no scientific proof to support these claims.{{Cite web |last=Hardy |first=Benjamin |title=Most personality tests (like Myers-Briggs) are junk science and can make you cling to a label — instead, focus on making meaningful change |url=https://www.businessinsider.com/most-personality-tests-junk-science-make-you-cling-to-label-2020-7 |access-date=2023-09-18 |website=Business Insider |language=en-US}}{{Verification-failed|date=November 2023}}

Criticism

The Hartman Institute and its many subsidiaries offer "coaches" to businesses seeking to improve interpersonal relations, for career counselling, or to collect data for use in hiring practices.{{Cite web |url=http://www.hartmaninstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/validation_analysis.pdf |title=Validation analysis of the Hartman Value Profile (Standard Version - Byrum Method) |date=2005 |access-date=2013-10-29 |archive-date=2013-12-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131219050051/http://www.hartmaninstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/validation_analysis.pdf |url-status=dead }} The test informally{{clarify|There is no such thing as "informal" psychometric reliability and validity.|date=January 2022}} passes most psychometric measures of reliability and face validity,{{cite journal | last1=Ault | first1=John T. | last2=Barney | first2=Steve T. | title=Construct Validity and Reliability of Hartman's Color Code Personality Profile | journal=International Journal of Selection and Assessment | publisher=Wiley | volume=15 | issue=1 | year=2007 | issn=0965-075X | doi=10.1111/j.1468-2389.2007.00369.x | pages=72–81 | url=http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=969150 | ssrn=969150| url-access=subscription }} but this may be attributed to the open predictability of the test.{{citation needed|date=May 2016}} The criteria are likely self-fulfilling to an extent.
