Historical notes

The inaugural running of the Hawthorne Handicap took place on May 25, 1974 and was won by Tallahto. Owned by Elizabeth Keck and bred by her husband Howard, Tallahto would win eight stakes races for her owner of which three were Grade 1 events and two were Grade 2 stakes. {{cite web|url= https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/108084243/ |title= Pac Quick scores in Bashford Manor – Hollywood results |publisher=The Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky), page 8|date=1974-05-26

In 2001, Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron won his fifth consecutive edition of the Hawthorne Handicap aboard Printemps.{{cite web|url= https://apnews.com/article/b33fd64332da64b206ee9b1e83e8d4d7 |title= Printemps Wins at Hollywood Park |publisher= Associated Press |date=2001-05-06 |accessdate=2021-11-17}} That feat tied McCarron with the Hollywood Park record for most consecutive wins of a single race set in the Los Angeles Handicap in 1974 by Don Pierce.{{cite web|url= https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-apr-27-sp-insider27-story.html |title= A McCarron Six-Pack? |work=Los Angeles Times |date=2002-04-27 |accessdate=2021-11-21}}

Hall of Fame jockeys Laffit Pincay Jr. and Chris McCarron each won the Hawthorne Handicap eight times. Their combined total of sixteen wins equals half of all the Hawthorne Handicap editions ever run.

In 1989 and 1990 Bayakoa won back-to-back editions of the Hawthorne. Both times, she would go on to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff and be voted the Eclipse Award as the American Champion Older Female Horse. {{cite web|title=Event By Year|url=http://www.breederscup.com/history/event-year|website=Breederscup.com|accessdate=2012-06-02}} {{cite web|url=https://www.ntra.com/eclipse-awards/ |title=Eclipse Awards |publisher=NTRA |date=2021-11-20 |accessdate=2021-11-20}}

The final edition of the Hawthorne Handicap took place on May 4, 2008 and was won by Tough Tiz's Sis owned by Karl Watson & Paul Weitman and ridden by Aaron Gryder.{{cite web|url=https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/newsletter-archive-2008/ |title=Sunday, Hollywood Park – Hawthorne H. |publisher=Thoroughbred Daily News (TDN), page 7 |date=2008-05-05 |accessdate=2018-09-16}}
