History
The Terminal 5 APM transit came into operation at the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008. It was the first ever deployment of the Innovia APM 200 vehicle. Initially the system had two stops, running between the main Terminal 5A and Terminal 5B, operated with two 3-car APM trains. In 2011, the line was extended to Terminal 5C and APM fleet was initially expanded to nine then later to ten vehicles.{{cite web|title=INNOVIA APM Automated People Mover System - London Heathrow, UK - United Kingdom - Bombardier|url=https://www.bombardier.com/en/transportation/projects/project.innovia-london-uk.html|website=Bombardier|access-date=2019-11-29|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180905215009/https://www.bombardier.com/en/transportation/projects/project.innovia-london-uk.html|archive-date=2018-09-05|url-status=dead}}{{sfn|Doherty|2008|p=84}}
Route
The Heathrow Terminal 5 APM vehicles run in a dual-lane tunnel totalling {{convert|0.67|km|abbr=off}} in length. The Transit System has three stations: the main Terminal 5A building (Gates A1-A23), Terminal 5B (Gates B32-B48), and Terminal 5C (Gates C52-C66).{{cite web |title=Flight connections {{!}} Airport information {{!}} British Airways |url=https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/airport-information/flight-connections |website=www.britishairways.com |access-date=30 October 2019}} The people movers operate exclusively "airside", meaning that the system can only be accessed by passengers who have first passed through airport security.{{sfn|Doherty|2008|p=224}}
A completely separate personal rapid transit system, the London Heathrow Terminal 5 PRT, operates "landside" between the car parks and Terminal 5.{{cite web |title=A Ride On Heathrow's Self-Driving Pods |url=https://londonist.com/2014/09/a-ride-on-heathrows-self-driving-pods |website=Londonist |access-date=29 October 2019 |language=en |date=5 September 2014}}
