References are shown by adding the {{tag|references|single}} tag or the {{tl|reflist}} template.

Parameters such as style or id were passed to the {{tag|references|single}} tag.

Only the group parameter is allowed. Using the {{tlx|reflist}} template will avoid most of the possible issues with the {{tag|references|single}} tag. See the documentation for details.

Since the addition of reference groups, this error should no longer be invoked— the message {{red|{{MediaWiki:Cite error references invalid parameters group|nocat=true}}}} will be displayed. If you encounter this error, please report it on the talk page.
