The Helsinki Central Library Oodi ({{langx|fi|Helsingin keskustakirjasto Oodi}}; {{langx|sv|Helsingfors centrumbibliotek Ode}}), commonly referred to as Oodi ({{literal translation|ode}}), is a public library in Helsinki, Finland. The library is situated in the Kluuvi district, close to Helsinki Central Station and next to Helsinki Music Centre and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. Despite its name, the library is not the main library in the Helsinki City Library system, which is located in Pasila instead; "central" refers to its location in the city centre.

History

A design competition in 2012 to build the library was won by the Finnish architectural firm ALA Architects and structural design by Ramboll Finland.{{cite web|title=ALA Architects wins Helsinki library competition|url=http://www.dezeen.com/2013/06/14/ala-architects-wins-helsinki-library-competition/|website=Dezeen|accessdate=29 January 2015|date=14 June 2013}}{{cite web|title=Helsinki Central Library to bring together people, stories and knowledge|url=http://www.ramboll.com/media/rgr/helsinki-city_library|website=Ramboll|accessdate=22 February 2017|date=7 April 2013|archive-date=25 September 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220925005145/https://ramboll.com/media/rgr/helsinki-city_library|url-status=dead}} ALA Architects won the commission over 543 other competitors.{{cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/10/travel/libraries-are-the-tourist-attractions.html|title=Where Libraries are the Tourist Attractions|work=The New York Times|last=Krueger|first=Alyson|accessdate=10 August 2019}} The library was planned to be a three-story building and to include a sauna (which hasn't materialised {{As of|2021|lc=y}}) and a ground-floor movie theatre.{{cite web|last1=Rosenfeld|first1=Karissa|title=New Images Take You Inside ALA's Helsinki Central Library|url=http://www.archdaily.com/549461/new-images-take-you-inside-ala-s-helsimnki-central-library/|website=ArchDaily|accessdate=29 January 2015|date=18 September 2014}} In January 2015, the Helsinki City Council voted 75–8 to launch the building project. The estimated costs of the new library was {{currency|98 million|EUR|passthrough=yes}}, of which the state agreed to pay {{currency|30 million|EUR|linked=no|passthrough=yes}} in connection with the centenary of Finland's independence in 2017. The City of Helsinki budgeted {{currency|66 million|EUR|linked=no|passthrough=yes}} for the building.{{cite news|url=https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/state-of-the-art_helsinki_library_to_showcase_wooden_architecture/7767954|title=State-of-the-art Helsinki library to showcase wooden architecture|work=Yle Uutiset|date=29 January 2015|accessdate=29 January 2015}}

On 31 December 2016, it was announced that the new library would be named {{lang|fi|Oodi}} in Finnish and {{lang|sv|Ode}} in Swedish. The name was selected from a pool of some 1,600 names proposed by the public. According to Helsinki Deputy City Director Ritva Viljanen, "Oodi" was chosen because it's easy to remember, easy to say, and easy to translate. The selection jury also did not want to name the new library after a person.{{cite news|title=Helsingfors nya centrumbibba fick sitt namn: Oodi|language=sv|trans-title=Helsinki's new central library gets its name: Oodi|date=31 December 2016|last=Koskinen|first=Eva-Maria|work=Yle|url=https://svenska.yle.fi/artikel/2016/12/31/helsingfors-nya-centrumbibba-fick-sitt-namn-oodi|access-date=2021-10-04}}

The library was built in the Töölönlahti district next to Helsinki Music Centre and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and inaugurated on 5 December 2018 on the eve of the Finnish Independence Day.{{cite news|title=New Helsinki central library to include sauna after all|url=https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/new_helsinki_central_library_to_include_sauna_after_all/7123693|accessdate=29 January 2015|work=Yle Uutiset|date=6 March 2014}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/arts/design/helsinki-library-oodi.html|title=Helsinki's New Library Has 3-D Printers and Power Tools.
