Ecology

The species is a near complete "oxyconformer" in that its aerobic metabolism is significantly depressed and impacted at low oxygen levels.{{Cite thesis|last=Cassista |first=Jason |year=1995|title=The Aerobic Metabolism and Behavior of the Burrow-dwelling Mantis Shrimp, HEMISQUILLA ENSIGERA CALIFORNIENSIS |url=https://scholarsrepository.llu.edu/etd/611 |publisher=Loma Linda University|type=MSc thesis}}
