Moscovici received his undergraduate degree in 1966 and his doctorate in 1971 at the University of Bucharest under the supervision of Gheorghe Vrânceanu.{{MathGenealogy|id=11648|title=Henri Moscovici}} From 1966 to 1971 Moscovici was an assistant at Politehnica University of Bucharest, from 1971 to 1975 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy and from 1975 to 1977 at the Institute of Atomic Physics in Măgurele, and from 1977 at the INCREST in Bucharest. In 1978 he left for the United States, where he was a visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

In 1980 he joined the Ohio State University, where he held the Alice Wood Chair in Mathematics;{{cite web|title=Alice Louise Ridenour Wood, Endowed Chairs, College of Arts and Sciences|website=Ohio State University|url=https://www.osu.edu/giving/endowments/endowed-chairs/college-of-arts-and-sciences|date=2018-12-06}} he is now a Professor Emeritus there.

Moscovici does research on representation theory, global analysis, and non-commutative geometry, in which he has collaborated with, among others, Alain Connes, since the two met at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1978.{{cite web|url=https://celebratio.org/Connes_A/article/842/|title=Interview with Alain Connes|first=Allyn|last=Jackson| year=2021|website=celebratio.org|publisher=Celebratio Mathematica|access-date=February 24, 2022}} With Connes he proved in 1990 a refinement of the Atiyah–Singer index theorem.{{citation|first1=Alain|last1=Connes|author1-link=Alain Connes|first2=Henri|last2=Moscovici|title=Cyclic cohomology, the Novikov conjecture and hyperbolic groups|journal=Topology|volume=29|year=1990|pages=345–388|url=http://www.alainconnes.org/docs/novikov.pdf|zbl=0759.58047|doi=10.1016/0040-9383(90)90003-3|issue=3|doi-access=free}}{{cite journal|author=Skandalis, Georges|authorlink=Georges Skandalis|title=Géométrie non commutative, opérateur de signature transverse et algèbres de Hopf (d'après Connes et Moscovici)|journal=Séminaire Bourbaki|issue= 892|year=2001|url=https://webusers.imj-prg.fr/~georges.skandalis/Publications/Publi36.pdf}} As recounted by Connes in a 2021 interview, Moscovici became his greatest collaborator.

In 1990 he was Invited Speaker with talk Cyclic cohomology and invariants of multiply connected manifold at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto.{{cite book|author=Moscovici, Henri|chapter=Cyclic cohomology and invariants of multiply connected manifolds|title=In: Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians|volume=1|pages=675–688|year=1990|citeseerx=10.1.1.466.1366}} He has advised 14 Ph.D. students, including {{ill|András Némethi|hu|Némethi András}}.
