Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1896. was elected to membership of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society on 30.11.1915 and was President of the Society 1919–21.
