He was the son of Henry Yellowlees MD (1888–1971) and grandson of David Yellowlees (1835–1921) both of whom were eminent psychiatrists in Scotland.{{cite web | url=https://history.rcplondon.ac.uk/inspiring-physicians/henry-yellowlees | title=Henry Yellowlees | RCP Museum }}

He was educated at Stowe School and University College, Oxford. He served in the RAF as a pilot in the Second World War.{{cite web | url=https://history.rcplondon.ac.uk/inspiring-physicians/henry-yellowlees | title=Henry Yellowlees | RCP Museum }}

He died on 22 March 2006, survived by his second wife, Mary, and three children he had with his first wife, Sally.
