The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) cis-acting replication element (CRE) is an RNA element which is found in the coding region of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase NS5B. Mutations in this family have been found to cause a blockage in RNA replication and it is thought that both the primary sequence and the structure of this element are crucial for HCV RNA replication.{{cite journal | vauthors = You S, Stump DD, Branch AD, Rice CM | title = A cis-acting replication element in the sequence encoding the NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase is required for hepatitis C virus RNA replication | journal = Journal of Virology | volume = 78 | issue = 3 | pages = 1352–1366 | date = February 2004 | pmid = 14722290 | pmc = 321395 | doi = 10.1128/JVI.78.3.1352-1366.2004 }}
