Herbert Bate

Born in Brixton, Surrey, into a clerical family, the son of Rev. George Osborn Bate.Who was Who. 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}} He was educated at St Paul's School, London and Trinity College, Oxford, where he earned first-class honours in modern classics. He was Rector of Hadleigh, Suffolk and Dean of Bocking, Essex until his appointment to York.
