It was co-written by band members Ray Slijngaard and Anita Doth and was released in March 1995 by Byte Records as the third single from their third album, Real Things (1994). In the United States, the song was released as a double A-side single with 2 Unlimited's next European single, "Nothing Like the Rain". "Here I Go" became a top-10 hit in at least five countries: Belgium, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Spain. Its black-and-white music video was directed by Nigel Simpkiss.

Critical reception
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "One of the first act's to merge hi-NRG bounce with rave aggression may finally have the single that sends 'em all the way to the top of the pops. Male rapping and female vamping collide and happily coexist inside a storm of syncopated beats and blippy synth passages."{{cite magazine|url=http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/90s/1995/BB-1995-09-23.pdf|first=Larry|last=Flick|title=Single Reviews|magazine=Billboard|date=23 September 1995|access-date=23 January 2018|author-link=Larry Flick}} Gil Robertson IV from Cash Box said, "Rap/hip-hop meets techno-dance on this single, which should do well on both rap and dance formats. The music here is thumping, pumping, and more, which should certainly get everyone partying on the dance floor."{{cite magazine|first=Gil|last=Robertson IV|title=Rap Single Reviews|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/90s/1995/CB-1995-07-15.pdf|magazine=Cash Box|date=15 July 1995|page=13|access-date=8 November 2022|author-link=Gil Robertson IV}}
Caroline Sullivan from The Guardian complimented "a slightly pensive lyric" on the "percussive" track.Sullivan, Caroline (17 June 1994). "Music: Escape unlimited - Pop/rock". The Guardian. A reviewer from Music Week felt that it "stays in familiar Euro techno territory", adding that "a mix from Alex Party should help it follow the previous 11 into the Top 20."{{cite magazine|first= |last= |title= Reviews: Singles |magazine= Music Week |date= 25 February 1995 |page= 16 |access-date= 5 May 2021 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-Week/1995/Music-Week-1995-02-25.pdf}} In a retrospective review, Pop Rescue described "Here I Go" as "a belter of a track".{{cite web|url=https://poprescue.com/2014/11/07/pop-rescue-real-things-2-unlimited-cd-1994/|title=Review: "Real Things" by 2 Unlimited (CD, 1994)|publisher=Pop Rescue|date=7 November 2014|access-date=27 March 2020}} James Hamilton from the Record Mirror Dance Update named it "unexpectedly terrific".{{cite magazine|first= James |last= Hamilton |title= Dj directory |magazine= Music Week, in Record Mirror (Dance Update Supplemental insert) |date= 18 March 1995 |page= 15 |access-date= 6 May 2021 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-Week/1995/Music-Week-1995-03-18.pdf |author-link= James Hamilton (DJ and journalist)}} Pete Stanton from Smash Hits gave the song one out of five, saying, "It's another album track, slightly remixed, but, er, still the same." He noted that it "boasts a pumping beat".{{cite magazine|first=Pete|last=Stanton|url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/57779449@N02/54270186774/in/album-72177720323207180|title=New Singles|work=Smash Hits|date=1 March 1995|page=53|access-date=19 February 2025}}
Music video
The accompanying music video for "Here I Go" was far more arty and modern than previous videos, being shot in black-and-white with 2 Unlimited performing in a parking house and featuring performance artists on stilts. It was directed by director Nigel Simpkiss and was released in the UK in March 1995. Simpkiss also directed the music videos for "Let the Beat Control Your Body" and "The Real Thing". "Here I Go" is also the only video by the group to be shot in black-and-white.
