Himamaylan ({{IPAc-en|h|iː|m|ɑː|ˈ|m|aɪ|l|ə|n}}), officially the City of Himamaylan ({{langx|hil|Dakbanwa/Syudad sang Himamaylan}}; {{langx|fil|Lungsod ng Himamaylan}}), is a component city in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 116,240 people.{{PH census|current}}
Due to its coastal location, it is a rich source of different types of seafood, mainly fish, oysters, mussels and shrimps. The city celebrates the Himaya-an Festival every April 14–25.
Etymology
During the Spanish and American colonial period, "Himamaylan" was spelled as "Guimamaylan" or "Gimamaylan".{{Citation|title=File:Negros.jpg|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Negros.jpg|work=Wikipedia|language=en|access-date=April 25, 2021}}{{cite book |title=Report of the Philippine Exposition Board to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition |date=1904 |publisher=Greeley Printery of St. Louis |location=St. Louis, MO |page=121}}
It is derived from "Mamaylan", one of the pre-colonial names of Negros Island by Cebuano-speaking Visayans, and may refer specifically to the pre-colonial settlement in Himamaylan.{{cite book |last1=Ocampo |first1=Ambeth |title=Looking Back |date=2012 |publisher=Anvil Publishing, Incorporated |isbn=9789712736087}}{{cite book |last1=Sa-onoy |first1=Modesto P. |title=A History of Negros Occidental |date=1992 |publisher=Today Printers and Publ. |page=2}}
History
In 1795, Himamaylan became the capital of Negros.{{cite web | title =Inside Negros: Himamaylan City | url =http://www.insidenegros.com/negros-occidental/himamaylan-city/ | access-date =September 2, 2008 | archive-url =https://web.archive.org/web/20080902194737/http://www.insidenegros.com/negros-occidental/himamaylan-city/ | archive-date =September 2, 2008 | url-status =usurped }} At that time, the city served as a garrison for occupying Spanish forces. Today, the old Spanish-built fort constructed as a lookout point for frequent Moro raids is one of the historical attractions found in the city.{{cite web|title=Negros Occidental, Himamaylan City |url=http://www.negros-occ.gov.ph/negros-island/negros-occidental-cities/himamaylan/ |access-date=September 2, 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080612103655/http://www.negros-occ.gov.ph/negros-island/negros-occidental-cities/himamaylan/ |archive-date=June 12, 2008 |url-status=dead }}
