It was described by Linnaeus in 1753.{{Cite book |last1=Linné |first1=Carl von |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/13830 |title=Caroli Linnaei ... Like the related manchineel (H. mancinella), its toxicity makes it resistant to deforestation by locals.
Distribution and habitat
The plant is endemic to the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean (in the Dominican Republic and Haiti). It is found in the Hispaniolan dry forests ecoregion.{{Cite web |title=Hippomane spinosa L. {{!}} Plants of the World Online {{!}} Kew Science |url=http://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:349996-1 |access-date=2023-10-30 |website=Plants of the World Online |language=en}}{{Cite book |last1=Govaerts |first1=Rafaël |title=World Checklist and Bibliography of Euphorbiaceae (and Pandaceae) |last2=Frodin |first2=D.
