Design

File:Hobie 18 catamaran sailboat 7995.jpg

The Hobie 18 is a sailing dinghy, built predominantly of fiberglass. It has a fractional sloop rig, The twin hulls have raked stems, near-plumb transoms, twin transom-hung rudders controlled by a single tiller and twin retractable daggerboards. It displaces {{convert|400|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}.

The design has a roller furling jib, internally-mounted halyards and adjustable mast spreaders to allow mast adjustments fore-and-aft and abeam while sailing.{{cite web|url= https://books.google.com/books?id=pi2nqBeDRKgC&pg=RA3-PA149|title= New Boats - Hobie 18|access-date= 2 August 2022|last= Schieffelin|first= John|work= Boating|date= April 1977}}

The boat has a draft of {{convert|2.50|ft|m|abbr=on}} with a daggerboard extended and {{convert|7|in|cm|abbr=on}} with both retracted, allowing operation in shallow water, beaching or ground transportation on a trailer.

The Hobie 18 Magnum version has hiking wing racks that give a beam of {{convert|12|ft|m|abbr=on}} to allow trapezing crew members more leverage in keeping the boat level.

Operational history

In 1980 America's Cup racer and media mogul Ted Turner was racing the Hobie 18 and said, "it's a terrific boat, why didn't they have these when I was growing up!"{{cite web|url= https://books.google.com/books?id=vkRJy5ofYhMC&pg=PA117|title= Ted Turner Talks About The Hobie 18|access-date= 2 August 2022|author= Hobie Cat|author-link= Hobie Cat|work= Yachting|date= September 1980}}
