It has many rare species, especially of bryophytes, and there are ponds which have populations of great crested newts, a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.{{cite web|url= https://designatedsites.naturalengland.org.uk/PDFsForWeb/Citation/1002623.pdf |title=Hockering Wood citation|series= Sites of Special Scientific Interest|publisher=Natural England|access-date= 12 June 2018}}
