Hoevelaken is a town in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Nijkerk, and lies about 5 km east of Amersfoort.

Hoevelaken was a separate municipality until 2000, when it was merged with Nijkerk.{{Repertorium Nederlandse Gemeenten}}

History

It was first mentioned in 1132 as Hovelaken, and means "estate near the river Laak".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/hoevelaken |title=Hoevelaken - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=23 March 2022 |language=nl}} It started as a linear settlement. In 1402, the castle Huis te Hoevelaken was built. In 1672, it was destroyed and probably most of the village was destroyed as well. Between 1806 and 1809, the road from Amersfoort to Deventer was paved which resulted in an increase of economical activity in the village. The tower of the Dutch Reformed Church dates from the 16th century. The medieval church has disappeared during the extensions of 1866 and 1930.{{cite web|url=https://dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu05_01/sten009monu05_01_0115.php |title=Hoevelaken |author=Ronald Stenvert & Sabine Broekhoven |page=205 |year=2000 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9406 3 |language=nl |access-date=23 March 2022}} In 1840, Hoevelaken was home to 742 people.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/hoevelaken |title=Hoevelaken |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=23 March 2022 |language=nl}}
